Introduction to Constellations

Constellations were first recognized by the Greeks. It is argued that constellations were used as a method of direction during long travels, as during that time star maps were an effective means of following specific bearings. There are a total of 88 constellations in the night sky, although they can never be collectively seen at one time. 28 constellations lie between the North Celestial Pole and the ecliptic (the "path" traced by the sun as it is orbited by Earth); 47 constellations lie between the South Celestial Pole and the ecliptic; 12 constellations lie on the ecliptic itself. One constellation, Ophiuchus, lies on both the ecliptic and in the North Celestial Sky. The 12 ecliptic constellations make up the Zodiac, which is used in astrology. 

Below are the 12 ecliptic constellations and Ophiuchus. Match each constellation with its correct name. Each correct match is worth 5 points, making this assignment worth a possible 65 points.

For an additional 26 possible bonus points, correctly place each constellation according to where they fall in the Northern Celestial Sky: the Northern Spring Sky, the Northern Summer Sky, the Northern Autumn Sky, and the Northern Winter Sky. There are three constellations each in the Northern Spring, Autumn, and Winter Skies, and four constellations in the Northern Summer Sky. Two points per correct answer.

Points possible (excluding bonus): 65 points
Points possible (including bonus): 91 points (ETA 6/24: My math skills suck. I only just realized I made a mistake in multiplication. The base points for this assignment are 65, not 60.)
 
This assignment will be due on Friday, June 22, 11:55 PM ET. For each week it is turned in late, 10 percent will be deducted from what would have been your total.

Originally I had you down for 87 points, but then I realized that two other students' answers disagreed with my research in a way similar to yours. According to my research, Capricornus was listed as a Northern Autumn constellation. However, one other student used the same research you used, which did indeed list Capricornus as a Northern Summer constellation. I can't fault you for your research and my lack of extensive research to account for this problem, so I'll give you Capricornus-Summer as a correct label. However, I cannot compensate for your answer for Sagittarius. I realize you were doing it simply to keep the numbers I gave correct (which, admittedly, may have very well been wrong), but one thing I can say with confidence is that the constellation Orion is not the Archer. The website itself gives the layman name for the constellation Orion as "The Hunter" or "The Giant". While your intentions were good for making this label, it is nonetheless an incorrect answer and I cannot thus give you the points for that label. However, since that section was only for bonus points it will not hurt your overall grade. You got all of the matches correct and got 12 out of 13 labels correct for the bonus, awarding 89 points to Gryffindor. Good job!

You know, this was actually pretty difficult! Bravo! I expected it to be a breeze, but I felt a bit like Harry and Ron trying to make sense of the constellations! I'm not even going to attempt the extra credit this time (though I know most Ravenclaws would!), but maybe next time I'll take it on. Great assignment, Professor!
